An Online Career Counsellor in Ahmedabad, for a City Where Work Arrives Before the Decision Does

Because the advice that works in Delhi or Bangalore assumes something Ahmedabad does not have, which is a young person with nothing else to do. Here there is nearly always something else to do. A shop. A firm. An uncle who needs someone at the counter from Monday.

The numbers make the point better than any opinion. Gujarat recorded an unemployment rate of 1.1% against an all India 3.2% in the Periodic Labour Force Survey for 2023-24, the second lowest in the country. Youth unemployment for those aged 15 to 29 was 5.1% against an all India 10.0%. On paper this is a state that has solved the problem every other state is still arguing about.

Now put the second set of numbers beside it. Gujarat’s secondary school dropout rate was 16.9% in 2024-25 against an all India 11.5%, and its higher secondary enrolment ratio was 47.3% against an all India 58.4%, both from the UDISE+ 2024-25 analysis. Fewer than half the state’s sixteen year olds are in a classroom at all.

Those two facts are not in tension. They are the same fact. Work is so available in Ahmedabad that education stops being the obvious next step, and the decision that should be made at fifteen simply never gets made. Somebody just starts working.

That is the specific job here. A career counsellor in Ahmedabad is rarely arguing a student out of unemployment. The counsellor is arguing them into a decision, at the one age where the decision is still cheap to make.

GSEB, Which Carries Four Out of Five Students

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board is the default. In the 2026 Higher Secondary results, 1,11,090 candidates sat the Science stream and 4,35,102 sat the General stream, which is Commerce and Arts together. Science is barely a fifth of the cohort. General stream passed at 92.71%, Science at 84.33%.

One local detail matters more than the state average. Ahmedabad City was the lowest performing district in Gujarat in the 2026 General stream, at 87.10%, more than five points below the state figure. The city that generates the state’s money produces its weakest Class 12 General results. No adviser in Ahmedabad should be quoting the state number to a family here.

At Class 10, GSEB’s 2026 SSC result was 83.86%, with 6,34,327 of 7,56,392 regular candidates passing. Girls passed at 88.28% and boys at 80.12%, a gap of more than eight points that almost nobody plans around.

CBSE, and the English Medium Assumption

Ahmedabad has a large and growing CBSE presence, concentrated in Satellite, Bopal, Thaltej, Chandkheda and the SG Highway corridor. Nationally, CBSE Class 12 in 2026 saw 17,68,968 candidates appear with a pass rate of 85.20%, down 3.19 points from 88.39% the previous year.

Families move to CBSE mainly for JEE and NEET alignment. That is a sound reason. It becomes an unsound one when the child’s measured aptitude does not point at engineering or medicine, because the board switch then buys nothing except an unfamiliar syllabus. This is a question worth settling with an assessment rather than with a school tour.

ICSE and ISC, Small but Decisive

The CISCE cohort in Ahmedabad is small and academically confident, and it tends to look outward, towards national universities, design, law and study abroad. The risk here runs the other way. These students are rarely short of options and frequently short of a reason for choosing between them, which is exactly what a psychometric profile is for.

The Industrial Spine, and What It Really Hires

Gujarat was India’s largest exporting state in 2024-25 with Rs 9.83 lakh crore of exports, 26.6% of the national total. It accounts for 46.16% of India’s chemical exports and roughly a third of its pharmaceutical turnover, and processes about 72% of the world’s polished diamonds, according to IBEF. In the Annual Survey of Industries for 2022-23 the state ranked first in India for both fixed capital and output.

What that means for a seventeen year old is narrower than it sounds. These sectors hire chemical, mechanical and production engineers, quality and regulatory staff, plant chemists and supply chain people. They hire very few of the generalist graduates the city actually produces in bulk. The pattern is closer to Coimbatore than to a services led metro.

Pharma, and the Employers Worth Naming

Zydus Lifesciences, headquartered in Ahmedabad, employs over 29,000 people and runs 19 research sites with around 1,500 researchers. Torrent Pharmaceuticals, founded in 1972 and based at Thaltej, reported revenue of Rs 13,980 crore in FY2026 and operates in more than fifty countries. Intas is a short distance away on the same corridor.

These are genuine graduate employers with structured entry routes. They are also invisible to most Class 12 students in this city, who can name three coaching institutes and no employer. Naming them, and working backwards from what they hire, is ordinary work for a career counsellor in Ahmedabad.

The New Layer, and Whether to Plan Around It

Gujarat’s Global Capability Centre policy for 2025 to 2030 targets 250 new centres, more than 50,000 jobs and Rs 10,000 crore of investment. Six semiconductor projects have drawn Rs 1.24 lakh crore, with over 50,000 direct and indirect jobs projected. GIFT City across the river now hosts more than a thousand registered entities and 38 banking units.

Plan for this carefully rather than enthusiastically, in the way a family in Pune or Hyderabad learned to a decade ago. Announced jobs are not filled jobs, and the roles that arrive first are senior. A student should treat this as a reason to take a specific degree seriously, not as a reason to assume a job is waiting.

The Institutions on Your Doorstep

IIM Ahmedabad ranked first in India for management in NIRF 2025 with a score of 83.29. NID was founded here in 1961. Dhirubhai Ambani University at Gandhinagar closed its flagship ICT programme at rank 16 in ACPC 2025, the most sought after seat in the state. L.D. College of Engineering has been running since 1948.

None of that is in short supply. What runs short every year is the number of Ahmedabad students who applied to any of it before the deadline.

Class 9 and 10, Stream Selection

This is the highest value moment in the whole sequence, and in Gujarat it is also the moment with the highest attrition. A sixth of the cohort leaves during these two years. A stream chosen against measured aptitude costs two years and usually a change of direction at eighteen, when it is far more expensive. Class 11 and 12, and the Preference List

Gujarat’s common admission portal handled 6,99,525 applicants for 2026-27 across 41 universities and 2,933 colleges, many of them affiliated to Gujarat Technological University. It has also run as many as 36 admission rounds in a single cycle, stretching into November even though Class 12 results are out in May. Families read that as reassurance that there is always another round. It is the opposite. It is what a market looks like when nobody has planned.

The Graduate Already Working in the Family Firm

A large share of enquiries from Ahmedabad come from people in their twenties who are employed, earning, and unsure whether this is a career or simply what happened. Gujarat had roughly 2.83 lakh registered educated unemployed in March 2023, of whom 17,896 were in Ahmedabad district, and that figure counts only the ones who registered. The larger group is employed and unmeasured.

For them the work is different, and it looks more like the mid career work done in Indore or Jaipur. Not a stream, but an honest read of what they are good at, whether a qualification would raise their value inside the business, and what a move outside it would actually require. That is also where a properly built resume starts to matter.

Three things are worth stating plainly, because in this city they are what separates one adviser from the next.

No admission is sold here. There is no tie-up with any college in Gujarat or anywhere else, no management quota arrangement, and no commission on a seat. In a market where a great many advisers are paid by the institution rather than by the family, that is the first question worth asking anybody, and most of them cannot answer it the way this page just has.

No promise is made about a business either. If the family firm is genuinely the right place for this person, the work will say so and then concentrate on what would make them better at it. What the work will not do is pretend a decision has been made when it has only been avoided.

And the third is about what this actually costs you. A stream chosen wrongly at 15 costs two years. A branch chosen wrongly at 17 costs four, and the fees on top. A graduate who spends five years in the wrong role loses earnings that dwarf any counselling fee. Set against that, ₹2,999 for a psychometric assessment, an hour of structured thinking and a written plan is the smallest number in the whole decision, and the only one you pay before the mistake instead of after it. In Ahmedabad the bill for guessing still arrives. It simply arrives in years rather than in rupees.
