Off campus placement is any hiring route that runs outside your college’s placement cell, and for a large share of the 2026 and 2027 batches it is where the first job will actually come from. If your campus drive came and went without your name on the list, this is the part nobody prepared you for.
Table of Contents
I want to start with something uncomfortable. The silence after a campus drive is rarely about the job itself. It is about the next family function, and your mother fielding a question from a neighbour she would rather not answer, and that pressure is what makes people decide badly and fast. So here is the map instead, built from two students I actually worked with.
What is off campus placement, and how is it different?
On campus, the company comes to your college, the placement cell screens who may sit, and the process is scheduled for you. Off campus you go to the company, find the opening, check your own eligibility, apply, and nobody reminds you of the deadline.
That single difference explains most of what follows. In a campus drive the filters are applied quietly by somebody else, whereas off campus you meet every one of them yourself, usually as an instant rejection screen with no explanation attached to it.

Is off campus placement harder than on campus?
It is longer and lonelier, and the pool is much larger.
The campus channel itself narrowed, which is the part students blame themselves for. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education recorded in March 2025 that between 2021-22 and 2023-24 B.Tech placement rates fell at IIT Roorkee from 98.54% to 79.66% and at IIT Delhi from 87.69% to 72.81%. An RTI reply from IIT Hyderabad gives the denominator institutions rarely publish: 843 students registered for placement in 2023-24 and 388 were still unplaced, which is 46% at an IIT, against 22% two years earlier.
Meanwhile the off campus market grew. Naukri JobSpeak recorded entry-level hiring up 8% year on year in June 2026 against overall hiring at 6%, with Bhubaneswar up 21% and Indore 15%, both outpacing Bengaluru at 7%.
The sectors shifted too. TeamLease EdTech’s Career Outlook Report, published 11 August 2026 from 1,097 employers, put overall fresher hiring intent at 75%.
| Sector | Intent | Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Retail | 93% | Rising |
| E-commerce and tech start-ups | 93% | Rising |
| Manufacturing | 89% | Rising |
| FMCG | 86% | Rising |
| Travel and hospitality | 81% | Up from 77% |
| IT | 76% | Down from 81% |
| Engineering and infrastructure | 66% | Up from 61% |
| Consulting | 19% | Contracting |
Your campus trained you to want the one sector that is cooling.
Why did 59.5% in Class 12 end his campus hopes before he applied?
Case 1, the eligibility trap. A capable engineering graduate came to me after every mass recruiter’s portal auto-rejected him. He had scored 59.5% in his Class 12 boards. The cutoff was a strict 60% minimum, applied separately to Class 10, Class 12 and graduation, and he found out on the actual day of the drive.
Half a mark. No human ever opened his file. He had spent two years preparing for aptitude tests he was never going to be allowed to sit.
This is the most common preventable failure I see. TCS words the rule precisely: a minimum aggregate of 60% or equivalent CGPA, all subjects included, in Class 10, Class 12, diploma where applicable, graduation and post-graduation. That phrase closes the loophole of counting your best five subjects, which several state boards helpfully print on the marksheet.
Three further filters catch students who did nothing wrong.
- Extended education. TCS requires the course to be completed in its stipulated duration, so a student who took five years over a four-year B.Tech because of arrears, then cleared every one of them and finished with a first class, is still ineligible. Waiting to clear backlogs and reapply does not work here. It has to be a plan to apply somewhere else.
- Education gaps, measured from different anchors. TCS allows 24 months in total to your highest qualification. Accenture allows one year between Class 10 and finishing graduation. A single JEE drop year clears both, but two drop years, or a drop year plus a semester lost to illness, sits inside TCS’s rule and breaks Accenture’s.
- Cooling-off after a rejection. TCS BPS walk-in notices state that anyone who appeared for a TCS test or interview in the last 90 days is ineligible. Wipro’s published Elite criteria set six months. An unprepared attempt costs you a quarter of access to that employer.
Which companies hire freshers with less than 60%?
Several, and the list looks shorter than it is only because nobody publishes it.
| Programme | Class 10 | Class 12 | Graduation |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCS All India NQT hiring | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| TCS BSc Ignite | 50% | 50% | 50% |
| Accenture | 65% | 65% | 65% |
| Cognizant GenC | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| Capgemini | 60% | 60% | 60% |
| Apprenticeships (NAPS, NATS) | None | None | No % cutoff (degree or diploma) |
| SSC CGL | None | None | No % cutoff (any degree) |
| IBPS RRB | None | None | No % cutoff (any degree) |
Look at row two. TCS BSc Ignite sets its bar at 50% for BCA and B.Sc. graduates in IT, computer science, maths, data science, statistics, physics, chemistry, electronics, cybersecurity and biochemistry, and for B.Voc in CS or IT. My Case 1 student qualified for it comfortably.
Apprenticeships publish no percentage cutoff at all, and neither do SSC CGL or IBPS RRB, which ask only for a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Cutoffs also move by role and by hiring cycle, with Accenture publishing 60% for some roles and 65% for others, so read the specific notice on the company’s careers page before you rule yourself out of something you might actually qualify for.
What are the nine off campus placement routes that actually hire?
Nine: apprenticeships, mass-hiring tests, walk-in drives, job portals, hiring challenges, referrals, the PM Internship Scheme, government exams, and the National Career Service portal. Ranked below by how many freshers each realistically places in a year, which is a very different order from how impressive they sound at home.
- Apprenticeships (NATS and NAPS). The largest and the best converting. The Ministry of Skill Development told Parliament in March 2026 that NAPS engaged 11.84 lakh apprentices across 2025 and NATS 5.23 lakh, citing a third-party evaluation that put conversion to full-time employment at 72% and 74%. NATS takes B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com graduates too, and the graduate stipend rose to ₹12,300 a month from April 2026. Enrol within three years of passing, because a year of work afterwards makes you ineligible.
- Mass-hiring tests. TCS NQT, Wipro Elite, Cognizant GenC, Accenture and Capgemini drives cluster from January to April. The TCS NQT test itself runs several cycles a year and accepts a wider batch range than the flagship drive.
- Walk-in drives. Same-day decision, no resume-parsing software, and a pool limited to whoever reached the building by 11am. TCS BPS and Infosys BPM run these near-weekly across Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad.
- Job portals. Recruiters search the resume database as much as they read applications, so a complete profile with CGPA, batch year and a keyword-dense headline beats another hundred applications.
- Hiring challenges. Unstop, HackerEarth and HackerRank run assessments that end in interviews, and there is no percentage gate on a leaderboard.
- Referrals and direct outreach. The highest-conversion route of all, and the subject of Case 2 below.
- PM Internship Scheme. Stipend now ₹9,000 a month, age band 18 to 25, final-year students eligible with an NOC. Go in clear-eyed: across the first two rounds the government told Parliament that 52,600 candidates accepted an offer and only 16,060 joined.
- Government exams. IBPS RRB needs a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, and its local-language requirement works in your favour in your home state.
- The National Career Service. The Ministry of Labour told Parliament that 3.43 crore vacancies were mobilised on ncs.gov.in in 2025-26 as of January 2026. Many are bulk and informal roles rather than graduate jobs, but the volume is real.

How did four months of cold messages get him a job in Pune?
Case 2, the off campus win. Another student struck out entirely on campus. Rather than grinding job portals, he spent four months cold-messaging startup founders directly on LinkedIn, each message carrying a portfolio of personal projects he had built himself. He landed a solid developer role in Pune.
Four months. Not four weeks. That number is the part I most want students and parents to sit with.
What made it work was the portfolio. A founder reading a cold message has exactly one question, which is whether you can do the work, and a link that opens and runs answers it in about ten seconds. A message describing your enthusiasm answers nothing.
Two structural reasons this beats mass applying. Startup founders read their own LinkedIn messages, so no screening software and no percentage filter sits between you and the person who decides. And a good deal of hiring happens before a role is ever posted, which means anyone reaching founders directly is competing against a handful of people rather than four hundred.
If you are rebuilding your resume for any of this, my ATS resume guide covers what the screening software actually reads before a person does.
Where do you actually find off campus placement drives?
In four places, all of them free.
Company career pages list drives before aggregators pick them up, so TCS NextStep, the Infosys careers site and Wipro’s fresher portal are worth a monthly check. Naukri and Instahyre work better as saved alerts than daily searching. Unstop, HackerEarth and HackerRank carry the hiring challenges.
Then three government portals: the National Career Service at ncs.gov.in, NATS at nats.education.gov.in and NAPS at apprenticeshipindia.gov.in. Register on all three in one sitting. It takes an afternoon, and it is the step nearly every graduate skips.
What should you do in the next 30, 90 and 180 days?
In 30 days, fix your eligibility profile and register wherever a clock is running against you. By 90 days, finish one certification and ship one thing a stranger can open. By 180 days, be inside a real organisation and being paid.
First 30 days
Write down your own numbers. Class 10, Class 12, graduation, active backlogs, whether you finished within the stipulated duration, months of gap, batch year, age. Check them against the table above. Had my Case 1 student done this in his third year rather than on the morning of the drive, he would have walked in knowing which doors were shut and which two were wide open. Then register on NATS and on the PM Internship portal if you are under 25.
By day 90
Finish one certification. TeamLease names the credentials tied to its top entry-level roles: VLSI chip design, AI engineering, cloud security, digital marketing analytics and good manufacturing practices. Then ship one thing a stranger can open, which is what Case 2 was really selling. My list of high income skills for students is a place to start.
By day 180
At six months the most valuable line on your profile is paid work in a real company. The graduates who look strongest in March are the ones who stopped studying for the job in October and started doing it.
What will cost you months if you get it wrong?
Four things, in the order I see them do damage.
A master’s degree taken to escape the job market. Two more years consumes your batch eligibility at TCS, Accenture, Capgemini and Cognizant, and closes the NATS window completely. A postgraduate degree works when it is a specific gateway, an M.Tech for semiconductor design or an MCA for a non-CS graduate, and gets expensive when its purpose is delay.
An unprepared attempt at a mass-hiring test. Ninety days at TCS. Six months at Wipro.
Anyone who asks you for money to secure a placement. No private employer’s drive charges a fee. Government exams are the exception, with SSC CGL at ₹100 and IBPS RRB at about ₹850, paid only on the official portal and never to a person. Anyone asking you to pay an individual or an agency to secure an off campus placement is running a fraud.
Hiding a backlog or a gap. Offers are conditional on document verification at joining, and a declared gap with a paper trail behind it, a coaching receipt or a dated certification, survives that check. A discovered one does not.
How long does an off campus placement search really take?
Four to nine months, and Case 2 sat squarely in that range at four.
Apprenticeships, walk-ins and BPO roles have the shortest cycles, so first offers usually land in month two or three. The big mass-hiring drives open in January, which means a search starting now runs to about March before the largest wave resolves.
If nothing has converted by then, the diagnosis is nearly always one of three things, and naming which one is the whole job. You are failing the online test, so the fix is aptitude and not more applications. You are not reaching the test at all, so an eligibility filter is blocking you and you go back to the table. Or you reach interviews and lose them, which points at communication.
One last thing about the money, because families rarely say it aloud. Government survey data puts youth unemployment at 9.9% and urban youth unemployment at 13.6%, against a national rate of 3.1%. Being 22 and looking for work is statistically ordinary, whatever the neighbours imply.
Is off campus placement harder than on campus?
It is longer and you manage every step yourself, with no placement cell scheduling anything, but the pool is larger. Entry-level hiring rose 8% year on year in June 2026 against overall hiring at 6%, even as the campus channel narrowed.
Can I get a job with less than 60% in 12th?
Yes. TCS BSc Ignite sets its bar at 50% across Class 10, Class 12 and graduation. Apprenticeships under NAPS and NATS publish no percentage cutoff, and SSC CGL and IBPS RRB ask only for a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. A student of mine auto-rejected everywhere at 59.5% qualified for BSc Ignite without difficulty.
How long do I stay eligible as a fresher?
It varies more than students realise. Cognizant GenC accepted only the 2026 batch, while TCS All India NQT accepted 2024, 2025 and 2026. NATS gives you three years from passing. PM Internship is age-gated at 18 to 25.
Does cold messaging founders on LinkedIn actually work?
It worked for a student of mine who landed a developer role in Pune after four months of it. What carried the messages was a portfolio of personal projects a founder could open and run, rather than the message itself.
Are apprenticeships worth it compared with a normal job?
On the numbers, yes. Around 72% of NAPS and 74% of NATS apprentices moved into full-time employment after completing, and the NATS graduate stipend was revised to ₹12,300 a month from April 2026.
